GODOY, LEONEL

Mexican politician, Michoacán, 1950 -

I first started observing Leonel Godoy as he held several political positions in the Party of the Revolutionary Democratic, or such, the “center-left” and my favorite, the PRD.  He was a young, kinda mousey guy in glasses, but always saying good things and coming down on the right side of issues, I felt.  When López Obrador, another big favorite of mine, was elected Mayor of Mexico City in 2000 I was thrilled, of course, and further pleased to see that he appointed my Leonel to be head of Security in the Federal District of Mexico City.  Remember that Mexico City was some 22 million (!) people and at that time the largest city in the world (I think Shanghai or such has passed it by now).  I couldn’t believe my meek little fellow would be running the Mexico City Police Department!

He did a good job, too, and ought to be an example to other big metropolises (E-hem) around the world.

He later became the head of the PRD party, an important and visible post which he held for two years, 2004 -2006.

Below, on June 25, 2007, Leonel Godoy was declared winner of the PRD primary race to become candidate for governor of the state of Michoacán.  He would be a wonderful governor.  Good luck, Leonel!

And he WON!!!  This from the front page of yesturday's LA JORNADA, Mexico City, November 12, 2007.

CONGRATULATIONS, LEONEL!
