CORREA, RAFAEL
Newly elected
president of Ecuador, b. 1964 -.
Below, one of his first acts as president was to fire
the current head of the military.
Rafael Correa joins an important number of leftists
leaders in Latin America. Below, entry banner for the recent Sao
Paulo conference on Social Change in Latin America, from left, Correa,
Nestor Kirtchner of Argentina, Evo Morales of Bolivia, Hugo Chávez of
Venezuela, Fidel Castro of Cuba, Luis Lula of Brazil, and Daniel Ortega
of Nicaragua.
This weekend, October 6, 2007, Correa proclaimed to the transnational
oil companies, "Our oil is ours!" They didn't want to
hear it.
On October 23, 2007, Rafael Correa announced
that he would re-negociate the hated U.S. military base in Ecuador
established under his predesessor, and if the U.S. wanted to keep their
base in his country he would demand an Ecuadorian military base in
Miami, Florida. Way to go, Rafael!
Also in October of 2007, he announced the banning of "Halloween" in
Ecuador, calling it a United States imperialistic mockery of the Latin
American tradition of Día de Muertos, Day of the Dead. Good words,
Rafael.
