IBARRA DE PIEDRA, ROSARIO
Rosario Ibarra is an activist in human
rights issues. Her son, Jesús Piedra, is one of the "disapeared" students in the government
repression of 1968, under the presidency of Luis Echeverría. She
formed an organization of mothers of disappeareds and led protests in Mexico City
during the 1970's.
In 1982, she became the first woman candidate for president in Mexico
for the Workers' Party.
She was elected federal deputy in 1988, and federal senator in 2004.
Highly respected voice of the left and supporter of Andres López
Obrador, she is currently active in the protests against the repression
of governor Ulises Ruiz of Oaxaca.
