MONSIVÁIS, CARLOS
Author, journalist,
commentator, born
Mexico City, 1938 -
Carlos Monsiváis is one of the most important voices of reason in Mexico
today. He has supported lots of good causes, including AIDS
efforts, and is always possitive and soft-spoken at the same time coming
down hard on corruption and malfeasance in government. A really
nice person.
He's been very supportive of our group, here he came down to Oaxaca for
the opening of "Letra S," sitting with Sergio Santamaría on the far left
and beside Nancy Mayagoitia on the right. I made the big "S"
behind him.
He recently visited our condom store and showed a lot of interest in our
work, especially the Education Packet, below.
I showed him how to hold up the condom ...
And, yes, he bought our 37 THOUSANDTH condom! What a guy!
We got a nice little bit of attention for him in the papers. They
said Carlos Monsiváis buys an "historic condom." Wow!

And he let's 'em have it! "Resistance is the only hope against the
moral illiteracy of our leaders." Good!
"I don't want to see the church inside the walls of public power."
Below, reporting on a "problematic" speech by Carlos, who said, "Fundamentalists
believe that we're all the same as them."
He's received lots of awards, of course, over the years. Below,
the prestigios "Juan Rulfo" literary award.
Then just last year, he opened his own museum, which he calls the Carlos
Monsiváis Cigar Store Museum (!).
Wow!
With his cat.
Well,
he's a real nice guy and I admire him a lot. He always has a big
hello for me. Hi, Carlos.
